The End of an Era

Well that’s that, the very last game has been played at Highbury and what a game it was. It surely was a fitting way to send off the old stadium, sure she may have seen some better opponents but I doubt there have been very many times in recent memories where it’s been louder.

It was awe inspiring to see all the red and white alternating stripes around the ground. While the move to Ashburton Grove will only see us moving a few hunded yards to the west, it will be monumental in the amount of good it does for the club.

But back to the game because that’s what it’s all about.

We were a bit nervy at first, but then when Bobby Pires put us infront with a nicely done close rang volley. Almost immedietly afterward the stadium erupted into shouts and at that point everyone realised that Spurs had just gone down a goal to West Ham, we were back into the Chamipons League with 4th place! Of course being good old Arsenal we gave away a free-kick near the box and suddenly we were all tied up. Next thing we know they’ve got another one and suddenly it’s all going pear. Fucking West Brom are going to spoil this day.

Not if Thierry Henry has anything to say about it apparently. People get at him for not producing in the big games, say he goes missing. Well today he stood up and said “Let’s go guys, hop on my back and lets win this” and suddenly right before the half we got our equalizer.

We came back from the break and were even more uptempo than before. It was only matter of time before we got a goal and of course it came from Thierry. There’s nothing quite like watching someone who has his speed simply steal a mishit ball and make the other team look like fools. Which is exactly what he did and what a joy it was.

At the hour mark Freddie came on and West Brom made a substitution, we had a free kick get headed towards the backline and Sol got off his fat slow horse and decided to do some good for the team. Heading the ball back into the area for Freddie to go towards only to be held back by a West Brom player. The new West Brom sub had gone from warming the bench, to warming up the shower by getting a redcard in about the fastest timespan I’ve ever seen.

Of course Thierry came up to take the penalty. Dutifully smashing it into the back of the net. His celebration was a fitting way to say “goodbye” to the stadium as he would later say.

After that it was pure celebration mood around the ground because Spurs had gone down 2-1 to West Ham, we were on our way to a win that would secure our Champions League football for next season no matter what happens in Paris on May the 17th.

It will be weird going back to London and not heading into Highbury, but I’m excited at how The Grove is shaping up to be and can’t wait to see what a game there will be like.

Now it’s time to get nervous before May the 17th.
